How does the hair growth cycle work?
Have you ever wondered why your hair seems to grow at certain times more than others?
The answer may lie in the hair growth cycle. This complex process is divided into several phases, each with its specific function. Let’s explore more about how the hair growth cycle works.
1 – Anagen Phase: Active Growth
The first phase of the hair growth cycle is the anagen phase. At this stage, hair follicle cells multiply rapidly and hair actively grows. This phase can last from two to seven years and is influenced by factors such as genetics, age and general health.
During the anagen phase, hair grows about 1 centimeter per month on average. It’s important to note that each hair follicle independently goes through this cycle, meaning different hairs on your head may be in different stages of growth.
2 – Catagen Phase: Transition
After the anagen phase, the hair enters the catagen phase, which is a brief transition phase that lasts a few weeks. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks and becomes disconnected from the dermal papilla, cutting off the supply of blood and nutrients to the hair.
Although hair is still present in the follicle during the catagen phase, it is no longer actively growing. This is preparation for the next phase of the cycle.
3 – Telogen Phase: Rest and Shedding
The telogen phase is the final phase of the hair growth cycle. During this phase, the hair is at rest and is not growing. Instead, it’s just waiting to be pushed out by the new hair that’s growing beneath it.
This phase can last around three months. During this time, it is normal to lose around 50 to 100 strands of hair per day, as telogen hair is naturally shed to make way for new anagen hair.
4 – Cycle Repetition
After the telogen phase, the cycle begins again with the anagen phase, and the process continues repeatedly throughout life. It is important to note that although genetics determine the length of each phase of the hair growth cycle, external factors such as diet, stress and scalp health can also influence the health and vitality of the hair.
Understanding the hair growth cycle can help you make informed decisions about hair care and treatments.
Remember that although hair growth can be influenced by a number of factors, it is important to take good care of your hair and scalp to promote a healthy and balanced hair growth cycle.
